What is Soot? Burning candles emit soot particles whenever there is an improper mixture of wax vapor and oxygen in the combustion process.  This can be caused by a variety of conditions, including drafts, excessive wick surface, and reduced oxygen.  To minimize soot emissions, avoid placing the candle in drafts and be sure to trim the wick to eliminate the “mushroom” created from the previous burn. Additionally, the candle should never be burned more than 3-4 hours at a time to prevent soot particles.

What About a Topper? You may also consider using a candle “topper”. These devices sit over the top of the container while the candle is burning and serve to block drafts from affecting the flame and they channel the flow of oxygen to the flame and the emissions of the combustion directly upward and away from the edge of the container, thereby eliminating nearly all soot buildups.
